Earth Day

Tomorrow is Earth Day!

:) Yay hugging trees!

Hitchiti Experimental Forest, where the picture above was taken, is in Jones County, Ga. It has 5000 acres to it and is "a cooperative effort by the Southern Research Station and the Georgia Forestry Commission to showcase pine management for nonindustrial private landowners." (according to http://www.srs.fs.usda.gov/organization/exforest/#hitchiti)

Sadly like many places in the South, the Pine trees have been attacked by the Southern Pine Beetle. They of course have to burn all the trees there then, but they do replant them as well. The females start the destruction of the trees--just as females bees do all the work. There is no real cure for these beetles yet and they are the only ones that kill trees that they attack. Sadly, all trees in the area have to be burned so that they do not infect all the other pine trees around them.
